During this new event from our Tea Travel Series, we will explore the province of Ānhuī 安徽, located in Jiangbei tea area, East of China, through the flavors of its most famous and representative teas.
Our journey starts in the western prefecture of Lu'an, birthplace of the first tea in our tasting, 2022 Lu'an Guapian, a special green tea hand-shaped like a melon seed. Lu'an prefecture was mentioned as early as Tang Dinasty by Lu Yu, as an area of production of the highest quality green teas. This tea also managed to capture the heart of Zhou Enlai who, according to the legend, demanded a fresh cup of Lu'an Guapian as his last dying wish. The main production area is Jinzhai county, where our selected harvest comes from.
We will then explore the southern prefecture of Huangshan, through three teas from three different categories:
- 2022 Taiping Houkui, traditionally produced in Xinming Township, Huangshan District, derives from a special cultivar whose leaves can reach the length of 15 cm. The unique tapered shape is made entirely by hand and is an indicator of excellent craftsmanship.
- 2022 Qimen Zongzi: Qimen hongcha, known in the West as Keemun, is one of the four major red teas in the world. This rare version is wrapped in bamboo leaves, recalling the shape and texture of zongzi, a traditional sweet dish made of sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves and filled with jujubes or red beans, usually eaten at the beginning of June on the occasion of the Dragon Boat festival. Qimen area has unique natural conditions, warm and humid weather, often cloudy and foggy with abundant rainfall, and a rich environment composed by many mountain forests growing on fertile soil. The combination of these natural characteristics results in the special aroma and rich flavor of "Qi Hong", Qimen red tea.
- 2014 Ancha dark tea: this iconic dark tea also brings delicate notes of bamboo, given by the hand-made baskets in which the tea leaves are aged. It also comes from Qimen, thus bearing the same characteristics of the rich and humid soil of Qimen hongcha. It was traditionally used to restore qi, the vital force, in the body.
