The art of blending in pu'er tea
This month we discover the highly refined art of blending in pu'er tea, tasting how different single-origin teas blend in something new, carefully crafted to represent the ideal quest of its creator.
We catalogue flavors, we make both geographical and flavors-note maps; and then we play with it: because our quest is never-ending, and like alchemist we mix origins and hues, to achieve balances and contrasts playing with the art of blending.
This event includes two parts:
- in the first one we taste the undisputed classic of pu'er blending, famous in all the world: Dayi with its signature 7542, produced since 1975 recreating year by year the highly recognisable taste that mark the standard for pu'er shupu, and that is collected worldwide. We will describe it together with another classic, the 7572.
We do so few weeks after the Dayi's founder Wu Yuanzhi passed away, so it will be a chance to tell his story and to tribute to his fame.
- in the second part we taste a blend we called Guanzizai 观自在, that means "observation", and it follows many blending tests passionately done by Marco di Ubaldo.
It is a blend composed by three different single origin teas from Mannuo, Zhenkang and Mangfei: we will taste them one by one in single-origin varietal, then all together in the finished blend.
It is a unique chance to understand a blend, understanding the process and tasting its single components.
We will therefore taste 5 teas: Dayi 7542, Guanzizai tea blend in cake, the three teas that composes the blend (Mannuo, Zhenkang and Mangfei pu'er shengpu, harvest 2020).
This event is dedicated to those who have followed the traces of flavors on the maps, from mountain to mountain, from valley to valley; and to those who love to get lost in the fantasy of a journey of flavors whose traces will appear in your gaiwan, infusion after infusion.
The event is held on Zoom on two different dates: on Sunday, January 30th it will be held in English language only, while on Saturday 29th there will be an oral translation in Italian. Our tearoom in Milan will also host few participants to join the event live.
