The third chapter of our Tea Club opens on a wide landscape, stretching for 2.000 square kilometers on the Eastern side of Lancang river. After digging into the mellow taste and smooth complexity of Yiwu in the second chapter of our tea club, with the third chapter we want to broaden the experience of this historical terroir, expanding our tasting journey to cover all of the Six Ancient Mountains that wrote the history of Pu'er tea.
Here, on the Eastern mountains of Xishuangbanna, lie the roots of the early production of Pu'er tea, traded throughtout China and abroad since Tang Dynasty. In a Qing Dynasty record, we read: "Pu'er tea is famous all over the world. It comes from the six tea mountains under Pu'er prefecture: Youle, Gedeng, Yibang, Manzhi, Manzhuan, and Mansa [later renamed Yiwu], with a circumference of 800 miles. Hundreds of thousands of people go to the mountains to make tea."
The 8 sheng pu'er teas that we tasted in this chapter are the heirs of the long history of these mountains, where generations of local ethnic minorities have preserved, cared, worked, brewed and traded the precious leaves blooming on tea trees for centuries.
This journey spans through 8 Sheng Pu’er teas (15 gr each) from the famous Six Ancient Mountains, getting to know Yiwu area even better with new teas to add to our map:
