Incense and tea: the Chinese art of fragrance - Milan, February 16 2025, 10am
- Description
- Location
Living our tea forest, and a life in tea, we are in daily touch with fragrances that spontaneously enrich our time. For over two thousand years, Chinese culture has grown a strong relationship with fragrances that finds one of its expressions into incense, as a starting point to communicate and dialogue with nature, and as a way to widen our understanding of the universe, space, and time.
Chinese fragrance culture has constantly evolved along the centuries, finding refined ways to extract the best essence from long-lasting fragrant spices changing from burning of herbs and wood to resins, elaborated burners, heating methods and fumigations.
In this event we'll discover the Chinese art and culture of incense with a journey in history that begins in the Spring and Autumn periods, continues from the great Han and follows the heights of Tang and Song dynasties, over 1000 years ago, when people were paying the utmost attention to the elegance of life and daily life was inseparable from incense.
We will talk about Buddhism, where the “nasal view” pursues a real and aesthetic standard: the tangible and intangible nature of incense and its smoke, which is related to the Buddhist theory of "emptiness is colour, colour is emptiness” in the Heart Sutra, and contributed so much to its growth and inclusiveness in people’s daily life.
Chinese incense culture focuses on the transmission of thought and feelings, and together we will experience it: we will practice directly the art of incense, using original materials and fragrances from China, sharing this mesmerising part of Chinese culture and matching it with tea, as it has been done for centuries.
