Pu'er tea identifies strongly with its area of origin. The soil composition, the climate, the latitude and altitude, the structure of the broader natural environment, the historical changes of the area are all elements of what we call "terroir" and they all contribute to shape the specific taste profile that the trees in that areas will give to the tea. Tea is also a product of the seasons, that every year is new, making the work of the farmers and tea masters change accordingly.

In this tastebox we explore the shades of taste and fragrances that pu'er tea can have just few kilometers from mountain to mountain, village to village, and how they can all come together in harmony when blended. You will taste 6 pu'er teas with similar ageing, to focus on the tasting shades of their terroir:

2021 Youle Shengpu. Known since ancient times as one of the 6 great pu'er mountains of Xishuangbanna, Youle tea heritage is preserved by the Jinuo ethnic minority, whose people create pu'er teas full of floral fragrances. Try also our 2019 and 2022 Youle Shengpu to dive deeper into the taste of this historical terroir.

2021 Huazhuliangzi Shengpu and Shupu. The same leaves harvested in spring 2021 from wild forest trees on Huazhuliangzi mountain which, at an altitude of 2430 meters above sea level, is the highest peak of Xishuangbanna prefecture. Here we taste its Sheng and Shu pu'er tea, for a comparative taste of processing techniques. Try also 2019 and 2023 Huazhuliangzi Shengpu to taste a different season of the same terroir.

2022 Myanmar mountains shengpu: At the western boarded with Xishuangbanna, Myanmar shares the geological history and the big-leaf tree cultivars of Yunnan, the starting point of the spreading of the first tea seeds that slowly reached and settled in other lands. We selected these leaves in a borderland, from the ancient trees growing on the mountains spreading from Yunnan to Myanmar, and we processed them in the sheng pu'er technique to bring you something unique to try and experience.

2020 Jingmai Shupu. Jingmai mountain lays at the meeting point of the prefectures of Xishuangbanna and Pu'er and the border of Myanmar. The tea forest of Jingmai have recently become a UNESCO cultural site for their historical value and the rich biodiversity that make Jingmai an exceptional terroir for tea. In this 2020 Shupu you'll find all the layers and shades of a centuries-old forest and the soft bitterness signature of this terroir.

2020 Guanzizai Shengpu. A unique blend of three terroirs from three mountains in Xishuangbanna and Lincang areas: the precious leaves from Mangfei, Zhenkang and Mannuo mountains here are blended together in a smooth and perfectly balanced harmony of fragrances. The single fragrances of each terroir can be tasted also in the tastebox Guangzizai Observation.

Each tea included in this tastebox is a 15gr sample from compressed cakes

Pu'er tea Tastebox

A wonderful and diverse selection of teas. I particularly enjoyed the 2021 Youle Shengpu, which, to my delight, had a subtle vanilla note. The 2020 Jingmai Shupu intrigued me, as I've only sampled Shengpu from this region thus far. Lastly, tasting the 2022 Myanmar Mountains Shengpu reminded me of the diversity within the world of puer. Overall, a delightful exploration of flavours and regions.

Dear Miha, thank you for your review, we are happy to read that you enjoyed our special box! It is a way to create a narrative of flavors, as we often try to do, and we have many more ont he making. We wish you to enjoy your brewing!
